For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Sun Bay Beach and Caracas Beach. Escape the urban bustle at Media Luna Beach and La Chiva. And it doesn't end there: tour the pleasant surroundings at Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, kick back and relax at Green Beach, take in the waterfront at Malecon, and get great views at Puerto Ferro Lighthouse.

Popular historic sites such as Old San Juan and Sitio Histórico de San Juan are in your itinerary. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista and Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. Get out of town with these interesting San Juan side-trips: Luquillo Beach (in Luquillo) and El Yunque Rain Forest (in El Yunque National Forest). With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
Kick off your visit on the 17th (Sat): kick back and relax at Playa Punta Soldado Beach and then kick back and relax at Flamenco Beach. Keep things going the next day: enjoy the sea views from Culebrita Lighthouse, then enjoy the sand and surf at Tamarindo Beach, and then stroll through Zoni Beach.
