For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Start off your visit on the 21st (Tue): admire the striking features of Puerto Ferro Lighthouse and then enjoy the sand and surf at Balneario Sun Bay. On the 22nd (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: look for gifts at Isla Vida, then enjoy the sand and surf at Playa Media Luna, and then kick back and relax at Playa La Chiva.

Do a combination of car and ferry from Ponce to Isla de Vieques in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car, bus, taxi, and ferry; or do a combination of shuttle and flight. In December, daily temperatures in Isla de Vieques can reach 84°F, while at night they dip to 75°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Wed) to allow enough time to fly to San Juan.

Founded by the Spanish in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the Americas.
Get a sense of the local culture at Old San Juan and Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. Go for a jaunt from San Juan to El Yunque National Forest to see El Yunque Rain Forest about 1h 10 min away. Little Island

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
On the 26th (Sun), tour the pleasant surroundings at Flamenco Beach and then get your bearings at Culebra Public Library. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: stroll through Playa Zoni, then head off the coast to Culebrita, and then enjoy the sea views from Culebrita Lighthouse.
