Known as the capital of country music, the thriving city of Nashville combines old-world southern charm with a progressive urban flair.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Natchez Trace Parkway and Cannonsburgh Village. Rippavilla Plantation and Upper Room are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Nashville: Stones River National Cemetery (in Murfreesboro) and Winstead Hill Park (in Franklin). Step off the beaten path and head to Beauvoir and New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. Get a sense of the local culture at Lake Lawn Metairie and St. Joseph Plantation. Get out of town with these interesting New Orleans side-trips: Evergreen Plantation (in Edgard), Saint Rose de Lima Catholic Church (in Bay Saint Louis) and Whitney Plantation (in Wallace).
