As the state’s second largest city, San Antonio embodies Texas’ rich cultural heritage while maintaining the Old West charm of an oil town.
Step off the beaten path and head to Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site and The Museum of Western Art. Museum-lovers will get to explore The Alamo and Pioneer Museum Complex. Explore San Antonio's surroundings by going to St. Mary's Catholic Church (in Fredericksburg) and The Coming King Sculpture Prayer Garden (in Kerrville). Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Get some historical perspective at Washington-on-the-Brazos and Lakewood Church. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Texas Prison Museum and Texas Star Winery. Change things up with these side-trips from Houston: Bernhardt Winery (in Plantersville) and Sam Houston Statue (in Huntsville). And it doesn't end there: see the interesting displays at Space Center Houston, indulge your thirst for a good beer at Saint Arnold Brewing Company, get curious at The Houston Museum of Natural Science, and take in the dramatic scenery at Water Wall.
