St. George — 2 nights

St. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kolob Canyons and Red Hills Desert Garden. Visiting Riverside Walk and SunSoker Tours will get you outdoors. You'll find plenty of places to visit near St. George: Zia Pottery Studio (in Ivins) and Timber Creek Overlook Trail (in Zion National Park). There's still lots to do: see Off-Road Tours, take in the spiritual surroundings of St. George Temple, and take a stroll through Kayenta.

Des Moines to St. George is an approximately 7.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. The time zone changes from Central Standard Time (CST) to Mountain Standard Time (MST), which is usually a -1 hour difference. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Des Moines in May: highs in St. George hover around 83°F, while lows dip to 57°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Tue) so you can drive to Kanab.

Kanab — 3 nights

Kanab is a city in and the county seat of Kane County, Utah, United States. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway and Queen's Garden Trail. Take a break from the city and head to Navajo Loop Trail and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Explore Kanab's surroundings by going to Bryce Canyon National Park (Rainbow Point & Sunset Point) and Natural Bridge (in Bryce). There's still lots to do: admire the majestic nature at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

Drive from St. George to Kanab in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a shuttle. Expect little chillier temperatures when traveling from St. George in May; daily highs in Kanab reach 76°F and lows reach 41°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Fri) early enough to drive to Monument Valley.

Monument Valley — 2 nights

Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1000ft above the valley floor. Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Sat): don't miss a visit to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, see Off-Road Tours, and then take a pleasant ride with a tour on horseback. Here are some ideas for day two: stroll through Wildcat Trail, then admire the majestic nature at Goosenecks State Park, and then contemplate the long history of Bluff Fort Historic Site.
