Roanoke is an independent city in the U.S. Venture out of the city with trips to National D-Day Memorial (in Bedford) and Smith Mountain Lake (in Moneta). Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock is a town in Watauga and Caldwell counties in the U.S. Start off your visit on the 1st (Tue): look for gifts at Mast General Store, then take in the awesome beauty at Grandfather Mountain, and then relax and float downstream with Wahoo's Adventures. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 2nd (Wed): take a pleasant ride with Vx3 Trail Rides, ride a horse along Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, and then whizz through the canopy at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks.

You can drive from Roanoke to Blowing Rock in 3.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or do a combination of train and bus. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Roanoke in August, with highs in Blowing Rock at 76°F and lows at 59°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Wed) early enough to drive to Asheville.
