Founded in 1632 as a fortified settlement on the high ground between two rivers, Williamsburg served as a colonial capital of Virginia for over 80 years.
Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown Settlement are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Head to Yankee Candle Company and Williamsburg Potteryfor plenty of shopping. Take a break from Williamsburg with a short trip to Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, about 52 minutes away. There's lots more to do: take an in-depth tour of Historic Jamestowne, enjoy the sand and surf at Yorktown Beach, admire the striking features of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, and do a tasting at Williamsburg Winery.
