11 days in West Yellowstone & Glacier National Park Itinerary

The town of West Yellowstone has served as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park since the early 1900s.

Kick off your visit on the 6th (Mon): take in the natural beauty of Midway Geyser Basin, then witness a stunning natural landmark at Grand Prismatic Spring, then take in the natural beauty of Old Faithful, and finally take in the natural beauty of Blue Star Spring. Here are some ideas for day two: identify plant and animal life at Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, find something for the whole family at Yellowstone Big Gun Fun, then witness a stunning natural landmark at Terrace Spring, and finally look for all kinds of wild species at Firehole Canyon Drive.

Use the Route module to see travel options from your home to West Yellowstone. Expect a daytime high around 64°F in September, and nighttime lows around 32°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Wed) to allow time to drive to Glacier National Park.

The glaciers from which Glacier National Park takes its name mostly dissipated eons ago, but they left behind a scoured landscape of high and steep mountain peaks, sparkling lakes, lush alpine meadows, and thick forests.

On the 11th (Sat), hike the day away at Highline Trail. Next up on the itinerary: cruise along Going-to-the-Sun Road, explore the activities along McDonald Creek, admire the sheer force of St.Mary Falls, and trek along Iceberg Lake Trail.

Getting from West Yellowstone to Glacier National Park by car takes about 7.5 hours. Other options: fly; or do a combination of bus and car. In September, Glacier National Park is somewhat warmer than West Yellowstone - with highs of 70°F and lows of 40°F.
