The City and Borough of Sitka, formerly Novo-Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule, is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park and St. Michael's Cathedral. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Alaska Raptor Center and Kayaking & Canoeing. The adventure continues: look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas, cast your line with a fishing tour, meet the residents at Fortress of the Bear, and examine the collection at Sheldon Jackson Museum.

Washington DC to Sitka is an approximately 12-hour combination of subway, bus, and flight. You can also fly. Juneau is an unusual state capital in many respects.
On the 29th (Thu), head outdoors with Northern Passages and Glacier Bay, kick your exploration up a notch at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks, and then look for gifts at Alaska Knifeworks. On your second day here, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at DIPAC's Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, explore the striking landscape at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and then take in the dramatic scenery at Nugget Falls.
