Augusta

— 11 nights
Augusta is the capital of the U.S. state of Maine and the county seat of Kennebec County. The city's population was 19,136 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest state capital (after Montpelier, Vermont and Pierre, South Dakota) and the ninth-largest city in Maine. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Maine State Museum and Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum. Get outdoors at Giant's Stairs Trail and Boothbay Region Land Trust. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Augusta: Sweetgrass Farm Winery and Distillery (in Union), Castle Tucker (in Wiscasset) and Jacobson Glass Studio (in Montville). There's much more to do: explore the landscape on two wheels at Kennebec River Rail Trail, immerse yourself in nature at Viles Arboretum, steep yourself in history at Fort Western, and get engrossed in the history at Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum.
