Carbondale is a city in Jackson County, Illinois, United States, within the Southern Illinois region informally known as "Little Egypt." The city developed from 1853 because of the stimulation of railroad construction into the area. Venture out of the city with trips to Paducah (Floodwall Murals, The National Quilt Museum, &more), Garden of the Gods (in Harrisburg) and Metropolis (Super Museum, Harrah's Metropolis, &more). There's still lots to do: walk around Boo Rochman Memorial Park, explore the activities along Kentucky Lake, identify plant and animal life at Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, and delve into the lush surroundings at Shawnee National Forest.
