Explore Austin's surroundings by going to National Museum of the Pacific War (in Fredericksburg) and San Antonio (San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral & McNay Art Museum). Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Get a sense of the local culture at Space Center Houston and Glenwood Cemetery. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Houston: La Porte (Battleship Texas State Historic Site & San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site), Dickinson Historical Society Depot Museum (in Dickinson) and The Woodlands Town Center (in The Woodlands).
