Culebra — 1 night

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
Kick off your visit on the 6th (Thu): step off the mainland to explore Culebrita, then enjoy the sand and surf at Melones Beach, and then kick back and relax at Playa Tamarindo. Keep things going the next day: tour the pleasant surroundings at Brava Beach, tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa Zoni, then tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa Carlos Rosario, and finally get lost in a book at Culebra Public Library.

Traveling from San Francisco in January, things will get much warmer in Culebra: highs are around 34°C and lows about 26°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Fri) so you can fly to Luquillo.

Luquillo — 1 night

Luquillo is a municipality of Puerto Rico (U.S.) located in the northeast coast, northwest of Fajardo; and east of Rio Grande. On the 8th (Sat), paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour and then get outside with Outdoor Activities.

Traveling by flight from Culebra to Luquillo takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of ferry and car. January in Luquillo sees daily highs of 32°C and lows of 26°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 8th (Sat) so you can go by car to Ponce.

Ponce — 3 nights

Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico. Escape the urban bustle at Gilligan's Island and Playa Sucia. Let the collections at Parque de Bombas and Museo de Arte de Ponce capture your imagination. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Ponce: Faro Los Morrillos (in Cabo Rojo) and Scuba & Snorkeling (in La Parguera). The adventure continues: pause for some photo ops at Museo Castillo Serralles, step off the mainland to explore Isla de Caja de Muertos, view the masterpieces at Centro Cultural Carmen Sola de Pereira de Ponce, and admire the landmark architecture of Casa Wiechers-Villaronga.

Getting from Luquillo to Ponce by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: fly; or take a shuttle. In January in Ponce, expect temperatures between 32°C during the day and 24°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Tue) early enough to go by car to Rincon.

Rincon — 2 nights

A seaside playground in the Caribbean, Rincon was a small agricultural and fishing town until it hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship.
Kick off your visit on the 12th (Wed): kick back and relax at Survival Beach, kick back and relax at Playa Crashboat, then enjoy the sea views from Faro de Punta Higuera, and finally stroll through Domes Beach. On the 13th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: tour the pleasant surroundings at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, enjoy the sand and surf at Sandy Beach, and then head outdoors with Outdoor Activities.

Traveling from Ponce in January, expect a bit warmer with lows of 28°C in Rincon. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 13th (Thu) so you can catch the flight to Isla de Vieques.

Isla de Vieques — 3 nights

For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Playa Caracas. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Playa Navio and Playa La Chiva. There's still lots to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa Media Luna, enjoy the sand and surf at Balneario Sun Bay, and admire the striking features of Puerto Ferro Lighthouse.
