Saint Louis

— 11 nights

Gateway to the West

Test the local claim that Saint Louis is second only to Washington, D.C. in the number of free activities available by spending your holiday exploring the city's central neighborhoods, famous for their restored century-old red-brick buildings.
Step out of the city life by going to The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House and Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center. Get some historical perspective at Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis and Campbell House Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Johnson's Shut-ins State Park (in Middle Brook), World Bird Sanctuary (in Valley Park) and Fort Davidson State Historic Site (in Pilot Knob). There's still lots to do: stop by Lafayette Square, identify plant and animal life at Pickle Springs Natural Area, tour the pleasant surroundings at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site, and Head underground at Onondaga Cave.

In May, plan for daily highs up to 77°F, and evening lows to 57°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 31st (Sun) so you can travel back home.
