Founded in 1632 as a fortified settlement on the high ground between two rivers, Williamsburg served as a colonial capital of Virginia for over 80 years.
Governor's Palace and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will appeal to history buffs. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Hollywood Cemetery and Bassett Hall. Located near the memorial park marking the site of one of the largest Civil War battles, the town of Gettysburg sits in a landscape of rolling green hills with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Gettysburg National Cemetery and Antietam National Battlefield. Get some historical perspective at Jennie Wade House and Little Round Top.
