For most visitors to this part of the world, the wild part of Alaska starts at Seward, a small port city that takes advantage of the region's natural beauty.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Crescent Lake as well as Mt. Marathon. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Fishing Charters & Tours and Bear Glacier. Change things up with a short trip to Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park (about 32 minutes away). There's lots more to do: get interesting insight from Tours, see majestic marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and explore the striking landscape of Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center.

Columbus to Seward is an approximately 12.5-hour combination of flight and bus. You can also do a combination of bus, taxi, and flight; or drive. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time to Alaska Standard Time, which is usually a -4 hour difference. While traveling from Columbus, expect colder days and slightly colder nights in Seward, ranging from highs of 62°F to lows of 51°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 16th (Sun) so you can go by car to Anchorage.

Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kayaking & Canoeing and Lake Hood Harbor. There's much more to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, look for gifts at Cabin Fever, tour the pleasant surroundings at Willawaw Nature Trail, and admire the natural beauty at Alaska Botanical Garden.

Getting from Seward to Anchorage by car takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and car; or take a train. August in Anchorage sees daily highs of 66°F and lows of 53°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Wed) early enough to travel to Denali National Park and Preserve.

In August, daily temperatures in Denali National Park and Preserve can reach 66°F, while at night they dip to 49°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 21st (Fri) to allow time to travel to Fairbanks.

With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.
Kick off your visit on the 22nd (Sat): look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas, identify plant and animal life at Large Animal Research Station, trek along Angel Rocks Trail, then examine the collection at Gold Daughters Alaska, and finally go for a walk through Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary. On your second day here, find something for the whole family at Pioneer Park, then go for a walk through Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, and then examine the collection at Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum.
