Known as a ski resort town, Aspen's history goes back to its roots as a silver-mining village tucked away in an isolated valley of the Rocky Mountains.
When in Aspen, make a side trip to see River Rafting & Tubing in Buena Vista, approximately Buena Vista away. There's lots more to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Maroon Bells, look for all kinds of wild species at Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area, cruise along Independence Pass, and stroll around The John Denver Sanctuary.

For other places to visit, maps, traveler tips, and tourist information, you can read our Aspen road trip planning site.

New York City to Aspen is an approximately 9-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train, taxi, bus, and car. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 2 hours traveling from New York City to Aspen. When traveling from New York City in September, plan for little chillier days and colder nights in Aspen: temperatures range from 72°F by day to 41°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Tue) so you can travel to Fruita.
