In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Visiting Diamond Head State Monument and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve will get you outdoors. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Lanikai Beach and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park. There's much more to do: stroll the grounds of USS Arizona Memorial, steep yourself in history at Iolani Palace, and see the interesting displays at US Army Museum of Hawaii.

To find photos, maps, ratings, and other tourist information, go to the Honolulu tour planning tool .

New York City to Honolulu is an approximately 14-hour combination of bus and flight. You can also fly. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time to Hawaii Standard Time, which is usually a -5 hour difference. Expect much warmer temperatures when traveling from New York City in December; daily highs in Honolulu reach 82°F and lows reach 69°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 22nd (Tue) early enough to travel to Kailua-Kona.

Kailua-Kona

Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. Get in touch with nature at Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay) and Neptune Charlies Ocean Safaris. Change things up with these side-trips from Kailua-Kona: Honaunau Bay (in Honaunau), Kawaihae (Puukohola National Historic Park & Puukohola Heiau) and Waialea Beach (in Waimea). And it doesn't end there: look for all kinds of wild species at Kona Diving Company, take in the waterfront activity at Honokohau Marina, kick back and relax at Makalawena/Pu'u Ali'i, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Magic Sands.

To see ratings, reviews, other places to visit, and other tourist information, you can read our Kailua-Kona trip itinerary planner.

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.

Venture out of the city with trips to Jagger Museum (in Volcano) and Volcano Art Center Gallery (in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park). There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Pacific Tsunami Museum, shop like a local with Extreme Exposure Fine Art Gallery, admire the sheer force of Wailuku River State Park, and stroll through Keaukaha Beach Park.
