A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
Take a break from the city and head to Sokol Blosser Winery and Camassia Natural Area. Pittock Mansion and Columbia River Highway will appeal to history buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Portland side-trips: Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum (in McMinnville), Carlton Winemakers Studio (in Carlton) and Willamette Valley Vineyards (in Turner). Next up on the itinerary: admire the sheer force of Multnomah Falls, take in nature's colorful creations at International Rose Test Garden, shop like a local with Live Laugh Love Art, and see the interesting displays at Portland Art Museum.

The city of Hood River is the seat of Hood River County, Oregon, United States. Step out of the city life by going to Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and Timberline Lodge and Ski Area. You'll explore and learn at Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum and Fire Museum in City Hall. Take a break from Hood River with a short trip to The Dalles Murals in The Dalles, about 36 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: examine the collection at Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum, get impressive views of Mount Hood, admire the sheer force of Starvation Creek State Park, and do a tasting at Marchesi Vineyards.

Traveling by bus from Portland to Hood River takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. In August, plan for daily highs up to 32°C, and evening lows to 18°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Mon) early enough to drive to Astoria.

Astoria, named for famed fur trader John Jacob Astor, resides near the mouth of the Columbia River.
Visiting Haystack Rock and Columbia River Maritime Museum will get you outdoors. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Fort Clatsop National Memorial and Cannon Beach History Center and Museum. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Astoria: Tillamook Air Museum (in Tillamook), Lewis & Clark Salt Works (in Seaside) and Cannon Beach (Cannon Beach, Bronze Coast Gallery, & more). There's much more to do: appreciate the history behind Astoria Column, see the interesting displays at Seaside Inverted Experience, and enjoy the sand and surf at Hug Point State Recreation Site.
