A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Vista House and Lake Oswego Preservation Society. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and Columbia River Highway. Get out of town with these interesting Portland side-trips: Corbett (Latourell Falls & Bridal Veil Falls) and Old Aurora Colony Museum (in Aurora). Sacramento to Portland is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or drive. Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Sacramento in August: highs in Portland hover around 85°F, while lows dip to 60°F.
