Portland

— 12 nights

The Forest City

Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Venture out of the city with trips to Exeter Historical Society (in Exeter), Boston (St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, North End, &more) and George Marshall Store Gallery (in York). There's still lots to do: sample the tasty concoctions at Allagash Brewing Company, admire the masterpieces at Portland Museum of Art, get to know the fascinating history of Marginal Way Walkway, and visit a coastal fixture at Portland Head Light.

If you are flying in from Australia, the closest major aiports are Portland International Jetport, Portsmouth International at Pease Airport and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. In April, daily temperatures in Portland can reach 13°C, while at night they dip to 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Tue) to allow enough time to travel back home.
