Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Mammoth Site of Hot Springs and Insideout. Visiting Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Wildlife Loop Road will get you outdoors. Get out of town with these interesting Custer side-trips: Wind Cave National Park (Elk Mountain Nature Trail & Wind Cave National Park), Cascade Falls and Swimming Hole (in Hot Springs) and Keystone (Black Hills Helicopters & Presidential Trail). There's lots more to do: explore the striking landscape at Needles Eye Tunnel, cruise along Needles Highway, take some stellar pictures from Breezy Point Picnic Area, and contemplate the waterfront views at Sylvan Lake.

Deadwood is a city in South Dakota, United States, and the county seat of Lawrence County. Visiting Devils Tower National Monument and Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway will get you outdoors.
