A sparsely populated area with stunning views, Big Sur attracts artists and tourists traveling California’s scenic Highway 1.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Bixby Bridge and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You'll get in some beach time at Pfeiffer State Beach and Sand Dollar Beach. When in Big Sur, make a side trip to see Jade Cove in San Simeon, approximately San Simeon away. There's still lots to do: immerse yourself in nature at Limekiln State Park, admire the sheer force of McWay Falls, snap pictures at Rocky Creek Bridge, and trek along Salmon Creek Falls Trail.

Getting from Los Angeles to Big Sur by car takes about 6 hours. Other options: fly; or do a combination of train and taxi. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Los Angeles in August, with highs in Big Sur at 70°F and lows at 57°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 30th (Sun) early enough to drive to Monterey.
