Yorktown is a census-designated place (CDP) in York County, Virginia, United States. Kick off your visit on the 18th (Tue): contemplate the long history of Public Hospital Museum. On the next day, make a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, take in the history at American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, and then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church.

The River City

The capital city of Virginia, Richmond has diverse architecture, a large collection of monuments, and world-class museums that reveal the city's important role in American history.
Get some historical perspective at Edgar Allan Poe Museum and Berkeley Plantation. Step off the beaten path and head to Pamplin Historical Park and St. John's Episcopal Church. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Richmond: Petersburg National Battlefield Park (in Petersburg), Shirley Plantation (in Charles City) and Ironbridge Sports Park (in Chester). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Blandford Church and Cemetery, admire the masterpieces at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, get a sense of history and politics at Virginia Capitol Building, and explore the different monuments and memorials at Hollywood Cemetery.

Situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is perhaps best known as the home of three of the United States' founding fathers, including Thomas Jefferson.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to James Madison's Montpelier and Stonewall Jackson House. Popular historic sites such as Monticello and James Monroe's Highland are in your itinerary. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Charlottesville: Frontier Culture Museum (in Staunton), Lee Chapel and Museum (in Lexington) and Appomattox (McLean House & Appomattox Court House National Historical Park). It doesn't end there: stroll the grounds of Old City Cemetery.

You can drive from Richmond to Charlottesville in 1.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. In June, daily temperatures in Charlottesville can reach 84°F, while at night they dip to 64°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Arlington.
