The Oleander City

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like The Seawall and Galveston Historic Seaport - Home of the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Stewart Beach and El Jardin Del Mar. There's lots more to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of The Strand, find something for the whole family at Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, see the interesting displays at The Galveston Children's Museum, and take an in-depth tour of Moody Mansion.

To see maps, more things to do, where to stay, and other tourist information, go to the Galveston trip itinerary planning tool.

Indianapolis to Galveston is an approximately 7.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Indianapolis to Galveston. Prepare for much hotter weather when traveling from Indianapolis in December: high temperatures in Galveston hover around 65°F and lows are around 53°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Sat) early enough to travel back home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
