Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawaii

— 6 nights

Heart of the Kona Coast

Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Fishing Charters & Tours and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. Attractions like Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Rainbow Falls make great kid-friendly stops. Step out of Kailua-Kona to go to Hilo and see Akaka Falls State Park, which is approximately 1h 50 min away. The adventure continues: take a memorable drive along Saddle Road, see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, take in the awesome beauty at Mauna Kea, and stroll through Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay).

Big Pineapple

In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Discover out-of-the-way places like USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park and Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. Attractions like USS Arizona Memorial and Lanikai Beach make great kid-friendly stops. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Honolulu: Haleiwa (Waimea Valley & Shark Diving) and Byodo-In Temple (in Kaneohe). There's much more to do: hike along Koko Crater Railway Trail, take a tour of Battleship Missouri Memorial, contemplate the long history of Iolani Palace, and stroll the grounds of National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
