As the state’s second largest city, San Antonio embodies Texas’ rich cultural heritage while maintaining the Old West charm of an oil town.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Lost Maples State Natural Area and Grape Creek Vineyards on Main. Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Surfside Beach and Stewart Beach. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Houston: East End Historic District (in Galveston) and Quintana Beach (in Quintana). There's lots more to do: stroll through Hermann Park, engage your brain at Cockrell Butterfly Center, admire the sheer force of Water Wall, and get a sense of history and politics at City Hall.
