Located just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the county of Arlington blends big city and sprawling suburban environments.
Arlington National Cemetery and St. Bernadette Catholic Church will appeal to history buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Arlington side-trips: National Museum of the Marine Corps (in Triangle), Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (in Chantilly) and The Aldie Peddler (in Aldie). There's much more to do: get to know the fascinating history of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, pause for some serene contemplation at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, and stroll the grounds of Quantico National Cemetery.

Detroit to Arlington is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of bus, train, and subway. Situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is perhaps best known as the home of three of the United States' founding fathers, including Thomas Jefferson.
Do your shopping at Saunders Brothers and Moving Meadows Farm. Visit Monticello and Ellwood Manor for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Charlottesville side-trips: Copper Fox Distillery (in Sperryville), Brandy Station Foundation (in Brandy Station) and Magnolia Vineyards (in Amissville). And it doesn't end there: sample the tasty concoctions at Loose Shoe Brewing Company, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Trinity Episcopal Church, take in the spiritual surroundings of St. Thomas Parish Church, and do a tasting at Brix and Columns Vineyards.

The capital city of Virginia, Richmond has diverse architecture, a large collection of monuments, and world-class museums that reveal the city's important role in American history.
Head to Good Earth Peanut Company and Short Pump Mallfor plenty of shopping. Your inner history buff will appreciate Fan District and Menokin. Take a break from Richmond with a short trip to Rosemont of Virginia Winery in La Crosse, about 1h 50 min away.
