The Golden Heart City

With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Bouchard's International Dog Mushing and Sled Museum and Antler Arch. Spend the 16th (Mon) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's much more to do: see the interesting displays at Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, gain insight at University of Alaska Fairbanks, and get a new perspective on nature at University of Alaska Museum of the North.

Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.
Step off the beaten path and head to Friends of Eagle River Nature and Alaska Native Medical Center Craft Shop. Palmer

Palmer is the borough seat of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough in the U.S. Start off your visit on the 21st (Sat): trot along with a tour on horseback, then experience rural life at Reindeer Farm, and then see Alaska Backcountry Adventure Tours. On the 22nd (Sun), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: admire the verdant scenery at Hatcher Pass and then admire the majestic nature at Independence Mine State Historical Park.

Sitting on the shores of Alaska's longest fjord and surrounded by mountains, the port city of Haines boasts spectacular scenery.
