With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.
Kick off your visit on the 30th (Sat): get a new perspective on nature at University of Alaska Museum of the North, then have some family-friendly fun at Gold Daughters Alaska, then stop by Santa Claus House, and finally take in the exciting artwork at Alaska House Art Gallery. On your second day here, look for all kinds of wild species at Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and then get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour.

Houston to Fairbanks is an approximately 13.5-hour flight. You can also drive. You'll gain 3 hours traveling from Houston to Fairbanks due to the time zone difference. Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.
Take a break from the city and head to Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary. Kids will enjoy Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and Alaska Zoo. Next up on the itinerary: examine the collection at Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, steep yourself in history at Alaska Native Heritage Center, take in the natural beauty of Fresh Spring Water at Mile 109, and get great views at Beluga Point.

You can do a combination of flight and car from Fairbanks to Anchorage in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of bus and car. Expect a daytime high around 59°F in May, and nighttime lows around 42°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Wed) so you can drive to Seward.

For most visitors to this part of the world, the wild part of Alaska starts at Seward, a small port city that takes advantage of the region's natural beauty.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Exit Glacier and Alaska SeaLife Center. Get outdoors at Dolphin & Whale Watching and Kayaking & Canoeing. There's still lots to do: explore the wealth of natural beauty at Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center, take an unforgettable tour with a helicopter tour, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Getting from Anchorage to Seward by car takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of car and bus; or take a train. When traveling from Anchorage in June, plan for little chillier days in Seward, with highs around 61°F, while nights are about the same with lows around 47°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Sat) to allow time to travel to Homer.

Juneau is an unusual state capital in many respects.
On the 9th (Tue), look for gifts at Tripp's Mt. Juneau Trading Post, get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and then admire the sheer force of Nugget Falls.
