Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Kick off your visit on the 17th (Sun): trek along Rim Trail/ Campus Loop and then explore the wealth of natural beauty at San Juan National Forest. On your second day here, soothe aching muscles at Durango Hot Springs, look for gifts at Honeyville, and then hike along Animas Mountain Trail.

Traveling by car from Ouray to Aspen takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and car. Traveling from Ouray in July, expect nights in Aspen to be about the same, around 49°F, while days are somewhat warmer, around 81°F. On the 22nd (Fri), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Custer.

On the 23rd (Sat), explore the fascinating underground world of Jewel Cave National Monument and then immerse yourself in nature at Custer State Park.
