Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Reid State Park and Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like The Wilson Memorial Chapel and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Portland: Footbridge Beach (in Ogunquit), Long Sands Beach (in York Beach) and Wells Beach (in Wells).
