Located just 140 km (90 mi) from Cuba, Key West is an island only about 6.4 km (4 mi) long and 1.6 km (1 mi) wide.
You'll get in some beach time at Fort Zachary Taylor and Higgs Beach. Family-friendly places like Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory and Crane Point Museum & Nature Center will thrill your kids. Change things up with these side-trips from Key West: Big Pine Key (National Key Deer Refuge & Blue Hole) and Pigeon Key Foundation (in Marathon). Known as the "Venice of America" because of its extensive network of navigable waterways, Fort Lauderdale welcomes over 10 million annual visitors, most of them attracted by the city's popular beaches and marinas.
Take a break from the city and head to South Beach and Hollywood Beach. Relax by the water at Fort Lauderdale Beach and Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. Go for a jaunt from Fort Lauderdale to Miami Beach to see South Pointe Park about 40 minutes away. There's still lots to do: stroll through Las Olas Beach and look for all kinds of wild species at Anne Kolb Nature Center.
