In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Iolani Palace and USS Arizona Memorial will appeal to history buffs. Step out of the city life by going to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and Sunset Beach Park. Explore Honolulu's surroundings by going to Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Monument (in Pupukea) and Kailua (Kailua Beach Park & Lanikai Beach). Next up on the itinerary: kick back and relax at Waikiki Beach, admire the landmark architecture of Shangri La, tour the pleasant surroundings at Manoa Falls, and see the interesting displays at Bishop Museum.

On your second day here, trek along Sulphur Banks, trek along Kilauea Iki Trailhead, and then take in the dramatic natural features at Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku).

Traveling by combination of flight and bus from Honolulu to Volcano takes 4.5 hours. In January, daytime highs in Volcano are 81°F, while nighttime lows are 64°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 17th (Thu) so you can go by car to Kailua-Kona.
