Hilo, Island of Hawaii

Hilo
One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Visiting Mauna Kea and Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku) will get you outdoors. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Kilauea Iki Trailhead and Kīlauea. Venture out of the city with trips to Jagger Museum (in Volcano), Saddle Road (in Kailua-Kona) and Swim with Dolphins (in Puako). There's lots more to do: get interesting insight from Tours, take in the exciting artwork at Banyan Gallery, and take in the dramatic scenery at Rainbow Falls.

To find reviews, maps, where to stay, and other tourist information, you can read our Hilo attractions website .

Boston to Hilo is an approximately 15.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of flight and bus. The time zone difference moving from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Hawaii Standard Time (HST) is minus 5 hours. Prepare for a bit warmer weather when traveling from Boston in June: high temperatures in Hilo hover around 83°F and lows are around 69°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Fri) early enough to travel to Kihei.
