Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
When in Houston, make a side trip to see Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site in Anderson, approximately 1h 25 min away. There's much more to do: engage your brain at The Houston Museum of Natural Science, tour the pleasant surroundings at Smither Park, admire the natural beauty at Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, and test your problem-solving skills at popular escape rooms.

Despite its laid-back college vibe, Austin is an influential center for politics, technology, film, and music.
Your inner history buff will appreciate The Alamo and Mission San Jose. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Austin: San Antonio (Mission Concepcion, Natural Bridge Caverns, & more) and National Museum of the Pacific War (in Fredericksburg). One of the country's most popular shopping destinations, Dallas and its sprawling suburbs include more shopping centers per capita than any other urban center in America.
Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and Grapevine Historic Main Street District will appeal to history buffs. When in Dallas, make a side trip to see Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, approximately 50 minutes away. There's much more to do: see the interesting displays at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Dallas World Aquarium, steep yourself in history at Top O'Hill Terrace, and take a stroll through Bishop Arts District.
