The Forest City

Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Portland: Nubble Lighthouse (in York), Ogunquit (Perkins Cove, Marginal Way Walkway, &more) and Fisherman's Walk (in York Harbor). There's still lots to do: cast your line with a fishing tour, enjoy the sea views from Portland Head Light, kick back and relax at Casco Bay, and take in panoramic vistas at Portland Observatory.

Washington DC to Portland is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train and bus.
