Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Do your shopping at Termesphere Gallery and Art Expressions. Get a sense of the local culture at Mammoth Site of Hot Springs and Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. When in Custer, make a side trip to see Roughlock Falls State Nature Area in Lead, approximately 1h 10 min away.
