For those not from the South, Raleigh might be one of the region's better-kept travel secrets.
Take a break from the city and head to Umstead State Park and Conservators Center. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Neuse River Trail and Duke Lemur Center. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Raleigh: Carolina Tiger Rescue (in Pittsboro) and Eno River State Park (in Durham). The adventure continues: look for all kinds of wild species at JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University and don't miss a visit to Historic Yates Mill County Park.

Durham to Raleigh is an approximately half hour car ride. You can also take a bus; or take a train. In December, daily temperatures in Raleigh can reach 57°F, while at night they dip to 37°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Corolla.
