Astoria, named for famed fur trader John Jacob Astor, resides near the mouth of the Columbia River.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Oswald West State Park and Hug Point State Park. Get some historical perspective at Fort Clatsop National Memorial and The Lewis And Clark National And State Historical Parks. Take a break from Astoria with a short trip to Cape Meares Lighthouse in Tillamook, about 1h 25 min away. There's much more to do: take in the views from Astoria-Megler Bridge, examine the collection at Seaside Inverted Experience, and identify plant and animal life at Astoria Column.

Newport

A town that survives on the sea, Newport's population of just over 10,000 supports a healthy commercial fishing industry.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Mon): admire the majestic nature at Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area, then get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and then immerse yourself in nature at Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area. Here are some ideas for day two: kick back and relax at Nye Beach, stroll through Whale Park, then hike along Drift Creek Falls Trail, and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Mike Miller Park.
