A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
Get in touch with nature at Timberline Lodge and Ski Area and Portland Timbers. Visit Pittock Mansion and Eastbank Esplanade for their historical value. There's lots more to do: take in nature's colorful creations at Portland Japanese Garden, identify plant and animal life at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at The Grotto - National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, and look for gifts at Powell's City of Books.

Kick off your visit on the 30th (Tue): take a peaceful walk through Starvation Creek Ridge Loop and then get impressive views of Mount Hood. We've included these beaches for you: Haystack Rock and Cannon Beach. Popular historic sites such as Fort Clatsop National Memorial and Lewis & Clark Salt Works are in your itinerary. Change things up with these side-trips from Astoria: Cannon Beach (Ecola State Park & Oswald West State Park). Traveling from Hood River in July, expect nights in Astoria to be about the same, around 55°F, while days are a bit cooler, around 69°F. A town that survives on the sea, Newport's population of just over 10,000 supports a healthy commercial fishing industry.
On the 4th (Sun), enjoy the sea views from Yaquina Head Lighthouse, then identify plant and animal life at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, and then admire the majestic nature at Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area.
