Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Step out of the city life by going to Ruins Road and Durango Wildlife Museum and Fish Hatchery. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and Animas Mountain Trail. Change things up with a short trip to Nordenskiold #16 Trail in Mesa Verde National Park (about 1h 20 min away).
