Seattle — 14 nights

Nicknamed the "Emerald City" because of its abundant evergreen trees, Seattle is the cultural and business center of the Pacific Northwest, as well as a popular holiday destination.
Get some historical perspective at Pioneer Square and Lake View Cemetery. Explore Seattle's surroundings by going to Tahoma National Cemetery (in Kent), Bainbridge Island (Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial & Bloedel Reserve) and Brightwater Center (in Woodinville). Spend the 4th (Sat) wandering through the wild on Discover Nature. There's still lots to do: take a stroll through Pike Place Market, identify plant and animal life at Lake Wilderness Arboretum, stroll around Washington Park Arboretum, and get up close to creatures of the deep with Puget Sound Express.

Santa Monica to Seattle is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Santa Monica in May, expect little chillier with lows of 13°C in Seattle. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.
