The center of Cherokee culture in the eastern part of the country, the town named after this Native American tribe serves as a base camp for hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Cherokee: Maggie Valley (Waterrock Knob & Wheels Through Time Transportation Museum) and Waynesville (Sutton and Son's Antiques & Mast General Store). There's much more to do: try to win big at Casino at Harrah’s Cherokee, get engrossed in the history at Mountain Farm Museum, examine the collection at Museum of the Cherokee Indian, and trot along with a tour on horseback.

Highlands is an incorporated town in Macon County in the U.S. Explore Highlands' surroundings by going to Franklin (Pickens Nose, Bartram Trail, &more) and Sapphire (Whitewater Falls & Gorges State Park). There's still lots to do: take in the dramatic scenery at Dry Falls, get interesting insight from Highlands Aerial Park, look for all kinds of wild species at Highlands Biological Station, Nature Center and Botanical Gardens, and explore the activities along Lake Glenville.
