Rapid City — 4 nights

South Dakota's second-largest city, Rapid City has for many years served as a gateway to the West.
Get out of town with these interesting Rapid City side-trips: Keystone (Mount Rushmore National Memorial & Presidential Trail), Custer (Custer State Park, Wildlife Loop Road, &more) and Crazy Horse Memorial (in Crazy Horse). There's much more to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Bear Country USA, take in the awesome beauty at Black Elk Peak, take a memorable drive along Needles Highway, and get to know the resident critters at Reptile Gardens.

Newark to Rapid City is an approximately 6-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Newark to Rapid City, you'll gain 2 hours due to the time zone difference. Although Badlands National Park's name might not be the most inviting, its landscape of pinnacles, eroded buttes, spires, and an expansive, pristine mixed-grass prairie remain enticing.
Take a break from Badlands National Park with a short trip to Hurley Butte Horseback Riding in Interior, about 40 minutes away. Spend the 8th (Mon) exploring nature at Badlands National Park. There's much more to do: explore and take pictures at Loop Road, explore the striking landscape at Big Badlands Overlook, explore the striking landscape of Bigfoot Pass Overlook, and take some stellar pictures from Yellow Mounds Overlook.

There's still lots to do: stroll around Falls Park, get curious at Washington Pavilion, tour the pleasant surroundings at Sioux Falls Bike Trails, and trek along SculptureWalk & Arc of Dreams Monument.
