Step off the beaten path and head to Museum of Geology and Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Deadwood: Rapid City (Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf & Chapel in the Hills). There's much more to do: get engrossed in the history at D.C.
