The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
Explore hidden gems such as The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and National Museum of the Marine Corps. Get some cultural insight at National Museum of African American History and Culture and Smithsonian American Art Museum. When in Washington DC, make a side trip to see St George's Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, approximately 1 hour away. Detroit to Washington DC is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or drive. Traveling from Detroit in January, things will get a bit warmer in Washington DC: highs are around 7°C and lows about -1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Mon) to allow enough time to take a train to Philadelphia.

Satisfy your inner culture vulture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and St. Patrick's Cathedral. Shop till you drop at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets and Chelsea Market. Step out of New York City to go to Hyde Park and see Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, which is approximately 1h 50 min away.
