The tiny town of Friday Harbor is the largest village on the San Juan Islands, and it fits within just 2.6 km (1 sq mi) of space.
Take a break from the city and head to Lime Kiln Point State Park and Deception Pass State Park. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Moran State Park and Arctic Raven Gallery. There's still lots to do: examine the collection at The Whale Museum.

Portland to Friday Harbor is an approximately 6-hour combination of train and flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of train and ferry. Traveling from Portland in September, things will get slightly colder in Friday Harbor: highs are around 68°F and lows about 49°F.
