With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.
Go for a jaunt from Fairbanks to Chena Hot Springs to see Chena Hot Springs Resort about 1h 20 min away. There's still lots to do: surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, examine the collection at Bouchard's International Dog Mushing and Sled Museum, deepen your understanding at University of Alaska Fairbanks, and go for a walk through Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge.

Traveling by flight from Juneau to Fairbanks takes 7 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of ferry, car, and bus; or do a combination of ferry and train. For most visitors to this part of the world, the wild part of Alaska starts at Seward, a small port city that takes advantage of the region's natural beauty.
Change things up with a short trip to Pederson Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park (about 42 minutes away).
