The second largest city in Michigan and a hub of furniture manufacturing, Grand Rapids bears the nickname "Furniture City." However, the destination's original name came from the rapids of the Grand River that once ran through the downtown area.
On the 1st (Thu), examine the collection at Gerald R. Ford Museum and then make a trip to Rockford Dam Overlook. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 2nd (Fri): admire the natural beauty at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, then delve into the lush surroundings at Cascade Peace Park, then examine the collection at Gilmore Car Museum, and finally test your problem-solving skills at popular escape rooms.

New York City to Grand Rapids is an approximately 6-hour combination of bus and flight. You can also fly; or drive. Expect little chillier evenings in Grand Rapids when traveling from New York City in August, with lows around 61°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Sat) to allow time to drive to Traverse City.

Traverse City

Traverse City might be well known for its huge cherry industry, but its position along Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan endows it with fine scenery and a wealth of outdoor attractions.
Explore Traverse City's surroundings by going to Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (in Glen Arbor), Little Traverse Wheelway (in Petoskey) and Empire (Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, Empire Bluff Trail, & more). There's still lots to do: learn the secrets of beer at a beer tour and tasting and indulge your thirst for a good beer at Lake Ann Brewing Company.

You can drive from Grand Rapids to Traverse City in 2.5 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or fly. August in Traverse City sees daily highs of 79°F and lows of 60°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Tue) so you can go by car to Saint Ignace.
